Since inception, the Biotechnology Centre has grown to become one of the foremost authorities in biotechnology and related research in Ghana and has been participating in advocacy and training workshops in biotechnology and related fields for various stakeholders in West Africa and beyond. Since its establishment, the Centre has delivered on its mandate of providing facilities for teaching and research support to all other units within the University of Ghana and beyond in the area of new biological assays and techniques. To enhance the visibility and impact of the Biotechnology Centre on national development, MPhil programme in Biotechnology with options in plant science, animal science, soil and environmental science and food science were developed in 2015 to train postgraduate students on the advanced concepts and applications in the field of Genetics, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.
Amis and Objectives
The MPhil in Biotechnology Programme aims to:
- Develop expertise in advanced biotechnology concepts and principles.
- Foster a culture of academic excellence and robust research activities in biotechnology and related fields.
- Enhance practical skills in the application biotechnological techniques and genomic tools.
- Strengthen research capacity through strategic partnerships and collaborations with leading laboratories.
The objectives of the MPhil Biotechnology programme are to:
- equip students with advanced knowledge of the concepts and principles of biotechnology
- Train scientists to acquire knowledge, skills, and competency required in investigations in biotechnology
- Enhance the knowledge and skills of students to undertake research in biotechnology
- Equip students with the capacity to communicate biotechnology principles, concepts and research outputs
