Welcome to the Biotechnology Centre, one of the constituentunits of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS), University of Ghana. We provide training at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, research support and other services to the general public and other research institutions in Ghana and across the West Africa sub-region. We welcome students, interns and fellows of the University to our laboratories to provide them with hands-on technical training on modern and traditional molecular biological tools, technologies and methods.
Today’s world has become greatly influenced by technologies in every sphere of our lives. It is noteworthy that technologies have made life easier, more fun in some aspects and life-saving in others. The field of biological technologies have seen rapid evolution from its earlier days when it was used in traditional settings to domesticate plants and animals, later on for the study of cells since the advent of the microscope. Today biotechnologies have been applied in rapid and efficient genomics-aided food crop and animal production, fermentation for breweries, medicine and pharmaceutical industries. In Ghana and many parts of Africa, traditional forms of biotechnologies are applied predominantly for food production and breweries, however the more advanced forms of biotechnologies remain inaccessible to the industries due to limitations in human capacity, infrastructure, and cost-limitations.
It is our vision to become a Centre of Excellence for biotechnology and related research to meet national, regional and global challenges especially in the critical area of food and nutrition security. We therefore welcome national, regional and international collaborations for research and development projects. It is our hope to make the world a better place for Africans through the applications of these biological technologies to solve critical problems, enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of production systems in the crop and animal sciences.
